The Role of Green Strategic Leadership Capabilities in Creating a Green Climate for Creativity: Evidence from Marriott Hotels in Qatar
Given the global focus on sustainability, organizations increasingly adopt green transformation to enhance competitive advantage. Establishing a green organizational climate that stimulates creativity in environmental matters reflects a long-term commitment to sustainable development. Despite growing academic attention, a gap remains regarding leadership mechanisms guiding green strategies, particularly in fostering a climate supportive of green climate creativity. This study analyzes the role of green strategic leadership capabilities in creating a green climate for creativity. A theoretical framework was tested using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM), based on data from 116 leaders and Green Key Global commitment members at the Mariot Marquis Hotel in Doha. Findings showed a significant positive impact of green strategic leadership capabilities on the green climate for creativity. However, sub-dimensiongreen framing, assimilation, and transformation were hindered by rigid policies and centralized practices, limiting climate expansion and employee engagement. The add value of this study lies in revealing that achieving an environmentally creative climate is not solely dependent on the existence of green strategic leadership capabilities, but rather on integrating these capabilities with participatory organizational practices that go beyond centralization and activate employees' roles in environmental decision making and implementation- thus prompting a revaluation of leadership effectiveness when it is disconnected from actual institutional empowerment.
